MATA Residence
Porlamar, Vzla. 1995
The Jorge Coll urbanization, during the first half of the 1980s, was one of the first suburban growths in the city of Porlamar. Due to growth projections, it had been assigned as a high housing density, which exceeded the real needs of the sector. In the 90's, the projection was unrealized, so it was decided to rezone the area as single-family housing. This left a series of isolated 20 story buildings.
The house is located next to one of these urban landmarks. The challenge was then, to deny the building's existence. Hide the presence of these macrostructures from anywhere in the house, through the creation of introverted spaces. Using parasols that in addition to their inherent function, serve as a screen that does not allow reciprocal vision between the users of the house and those of the building.
The demanding program and the morphology of the lot forced the creation of a longitudinal design, exhibiting both the social and private areas. The courtyard of which the house lives is defined by the main structure and a stone wall. The stone wall, from the structural point of view, should behave as the main support of the house. Keeping the longitudinal element suspended gives the lower level openness in relation to the courtyard while the rooms are more closed and protected.
